The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers tangible assistance to those in need on a person-by-person basis. Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (or "Vincentians") are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to individuals in need. Members are available on-call to screen recipients and provide financial assistance. Commitment involves about 2 to 3 hours per month.
Our mission is more than just “giving” – the Vincentian aim is to strive for “self-help” – promoting “helping neighbors help themselves.” Vincentians strive to establish relationships with our neighbors in need and give them hope.
Our SEAS St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Conference is holding a linen and towel drive to benefit The Furniture Bank of SE Michigan. The Furniture Bank is key to supporting those who are transitioning from temporary to permanent housing. You may recall that we held a collection of gently used furniture for the Furniture Bank. The Furniture Bank is in need of linens and towels at this time.

This past fall and winter, SEAS SVdP has again been working with many of our SOS guests, helping them to transition out of homelessness by providing security deposits, rent and many, many furniture bank referrals. We work closely with the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan in Pontiac. Just this week, in the middle of a pandemic, they helped us fill a home with furniture for one of our SEAS SOS guest families.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish family helped the Furniture bank with a furniture drive in February, and it was a great success!
Currently, with the health crisis, the Furniture Bank still has many families in need—but their inventory levels to help families are low. They are looking for clean, lightly used furniture—beds, dressers, nightstands, kitchen tables and chairs, sofas, end tables and chairs. These are the ONLY furniture items they are able to use. They are also happy to accept donations of bed linens. If you are looking to do some spring cleaning while you are home—this may be a good time to do some good with items you no longer need.
The furniture bank will pick up items that are in good condition, from your home for a small fee of $30. This is less than the cost of gas and wages for the pickup.
If you want to arrange a donation, please call the Furniture Bank at 248-332-1300. For more details go to https://www.furniture-bank.org/donate/donate-furniture/ .
