During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the extraordinary ministers assist with the smooth distribution of Holy Communion. In addition, ministers participate in the presentation of the gifts, and clean the vessels after Mass. One minister, the Preparer of the table (PT), sets the vessels on the altar during the Offertory.
Often erroneously called "Eucharistic Ministers" (a term used by the Anglican Church for this ministry, whereas in Roman Catholicism only the Priest may be the Eucharistic Minister), the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMs or EMHCs) are laity who aid the Priest in giving out the Eucharistic bread and wine at Mass.
